Takasaki mountain that borders Beppu is famous for wild monkeys, specifically the Japanese Macaque.

Yufugawa Valley stretches over 12 kilometers between Yufu & Beppu. It was created by erosion of the Yufu-gawa River over years. The enchanting 15 to 60 meters deep valley offers magical scenery for visitors to enjoy, & especially the view from a suspension bridge over the stream in Saruwatari is magnificent. Because of its beauty, the valley is called “Oriental Tyrol”
